History of Delaware Funeral Home

The Delaware Funeral Home of Amigone Funeral Home, Inc. 1132 Delaware Avenue was founded in 1811. Many prominent Buffalo families have owned the property since then, including the Wadsworth's, Wayland's, Worthington's, Andrews', and Adam's.

Beginning in the 1830s, the mansion was rebuilt several times. We have meticulously researched and restored the mansion to its original condition when it was owned by the Wayland family in 1870. Newspapers discovered between the walls date from the late 1800s. Originally, the building was heated by individual coal fireplaces found in almost every room and lit by fixtures fed by gas pipes.

The restoration of the mansion revealed exceptional birds eye maple woodwork in the large conference room, which had been painted over for at least 100 years. Mantels for fireplaces date back to the 1870s. The funeral home was finished in a period-appropriate manner, with oak wainscoting. Antique furniture from the late 1800s lines the corridors of the funeral home, providing a glimpse into the past. The third floor, with its beautiful hardwood floors, was primarily used for entertainment and dancing and has been restored to its original state.

The carriage house has been renovated and will now serve as a dentist's office. A library, conference rooms, offices, and a residence will be housed in the mansion. A grand foyer, a large Funeral Home, and visiting rooms will be housed in the addition. It is with great pride that the Amigone family has been able to restore this piece of history, contribute to Buffalo's revitalization, and realize my father's dream.
